Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
