A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
